Frequently asked questions

How is pregnancy due date calculated?

Due date = First day of last menstrual period (LMP) + 280 days (40 weeks). This Naegele's rule assumes a 28-day cycle and ovulation on day 14. Only 5% of babies are born on exact due date.

What are the three trimesters?

First Trimester: weeks 1-13 (organ formation, morning sickness). Second Trimester: weeks 14-27 (energy returns, baby movements). Third Trimester: weeks 28-40 (rapid growth, preparation for birth).

Is the calculation accurate for irregular cycles?

If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, the due date may shift. For irregular cycles, ultrasound dating in early pregnancy is more accurate. Consult your gynecologist.

When should I see a doctor?

Schedule first prenatal visit around 8-10 weeks. Regular visits: monthly until week 28, every 2 weeks until 36, weekly after. Pakistan has many qualified OB-GYNs at hospitals like Aga Khan, Shaukat Khanum, AKUH.

What foods to avoid during pregnancy?

Avoid: raw/undercooked meat, unpasteurized dairy, high-mercury fish, raw eggs, alcohol, excess caffeine. Be careful with street food. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, dairy, and prenatal vitamins (especially folic acid).

What changes happen each trimester?

1st: nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, frequent urination. 2nd: belly grows, feel baby move (~20 wk), more energy. 3rd: heavy belly, back pain, swelling, Braxton Hicks contractions, nesting instinct.

Can I exercise during pregnancy?

Yes, with doctor's approval. Recommended: walking, prenatal yoga, swimming, light strength training. Avoid: contact sports, heavy lifting, exercises lying flat after 1st trimester. Stop if dizzy, breathless, or bleeding.

When does the baby start moving?

First movements (quickening) felt around 18-22 weeks for first pregnancy, earlier (16-18 weeks) for subsequent. By 28 weeks, you should feel regular movements. Track 'kick counts' in 3rd trimester — 10 movements in 2 hours is normal.
