Frequently asked questions
How is electricity bill calculated in Pakistan?
Bill = Energy charges (slab-wise rates) + Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) + Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTR) + Fixed charges + PTV fee + GST (18%). The slabs are progressive — higher consumption means higher per-unit rate.
Who is a 'Protected Consumer'?
Protected consumers are those whose monthly consumption stayed below 200 units for last 6 months consecutively. They get subsidized rates significantly lower than unprotected consumers. Once you cross 200 units, you become unprotected for next 6 months.
What is FPA in electricity bill?
FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment) is added when actual fuel cost differs from the reference price. It can be positive (extra charge) or negative (refund). NEPRA notifies FPA monthly.
How can I reduce my electricity bill in Pakistan?
Use energy-efficient appliances (LED bulbs save 80%), inverter ACs (40% savings), avoid peak hours (5-11 PM higher rates), unplug devices, use solar/inverter, and stay in protected slab (under 200 units).
What is K-Electric vs WAPDA?
K-Electric supplies Karachi area only. WAPDA distribution companies (DISCOs like LESCO, IESCO, MEPCO, GEPCO, etc.) supply rest of Pakistan. Tariffs are similar but K-Electric has slightly different rates.
Why is my bill higher in summer?
Higher AC/cooler usage pushes you into higher slabs. Summer slabs may have premium rates. Also, fuel costs and FPA tend to be higher during peak demand. Solar panels help significantly.
Can I dispute my electricity bill?
Yes, file complaint with your DISCO or NEPRA. Common issues: meter malfunction, wrong reading, wrong slab application, or estimated billing. Online complaints accepted at NEPRA portal and DISCO websites.
What is net metering for solar?
Net metering allows you to sell excess solar electricity back to the grid. Bill is calculated on net consumption (consumed - exported). Significantly reduces bills for solar users. Apply through your DISCO.
