Frequently asked questions
What is PTA tax in Pakistan?
PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) tax is a regulatory fee imposed on all imported mobile phones. It must be paid within 60 days of arrival to register the IMEI and use the phone with local SIM cards. The tax includes customs duty, sales tax, mobile levy, and withholding tax.
Is passport registration cheaper than CNIC for PTA tax?
Yes, passport registration is significantly cheaper than CNIC registration. For example, a phone worth $400 may attract Rs. 12,200 on passport vs Rs. 14,661 on CNIC. Passport registration is available only for travelers who arrive in Pakistan with the phone within 60 days of their entry.
How to pay PTA tax online?
You can pay PTA tax online through the DIRBS portal (dirbs.pta.gov.pk). Login with your CNIC/passport, enter your phone IMEI, and the system will generate a PSID (Payment Slip ID). Pay this PSID at any bank, ATM, or via mobile banking apps like JazzCash, EasyPaisa, or your bank's app.
What happens if PTA tax is not paid in 60 days?
If PTA tax is not paid within 60 days of bringing the phone to Pakistan, the IMEI will be blocked. The phone will not work with any local SIM card. To unblock, you must pay the full tax plus any applicable late fees as per FBR rules.
Can I check PTA tax status online via IMEI?
Yes, you can check PTA registration status by sending your 15-digit IMEI to 8484 via SMS, or visiting dirbs.pta.gov.pk. The system will tell you if the phone is registered, blocked, or pending registration.
Do I need to pay PTA tax if I bought a phone in Pakistan?
No, if you purchased a phone from an authorized seller in Pakistan, the PTA tax is already paid by the importer/seller. The phone should come pre-registered. Always verify by checking IMEI status on dirbs.pta.gov.pk before purchase.
Are second-hand imported phones cheaper for PTA tax?
PTA tax is calculated based on the phone's market value (commercial invoice or assessed value), not the price you paid. Even for second-hand phones, FBR uses standard valuation tables. So buying used does not always mean lower PTA tax.
Can I avoid PTA tax legally?
No, PTA tax is mandatory for all imported phones used with Pakistani SIM cards. The only exemption is for travelers who use international roaming (no local SIM) for less than 60 days. There are no legal ways to bypass PTA tax for permanent use in Pakistan.
