Frequently asked questions
What is IBAN in Pakistan?
IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a 24-character standardized format for identifying bank accounts internationally. Pakistani IBAN format: PK + 2-digit check + 4-letter bank code + 16-digit account number. Example: PK36HABB0001234567890123.
Is IBAN mandatory in Pakistan?
Yes, since 2012, State Bank of Pakistan requires all banks to use IBAN for fund transfers. Account numbers without IBAN are no longer accepted for inter-bank transactions. International transfers (SWIFT) also require IBAN.
How is IBAN check digit calculated?
The check digit uses MOD-97 algorithm: Move first 4 chars to end, replace letters with numbers (A=10, B=11... Z=35), then divide by 97. The remainder, subtracted from 98, gives the check digits. This catches typos.
Where do I find my IBAN?
Your IBAN is printed on: bank statements, cheque books (front of cheque), online banking (account details section), debit/credit card welcome kit. You can also call your bank's helpline or visit branch.
Can I use this calculator for international IBAN?
This calculator is specifically for Pakistani IBANs (PK prefix). For other countries, the format and length differ. UK IBAN is 22 chars, German is 22, UAE is 23. The validation algorithm works for all though.
What if my IBAN validation fails?
Common reasons: wrong digit entered, missing characters, wrong bank code, or actual invalid IBAN. Double-check from your bank statement. If still invalid, contact your bank as IBAN may have been issued incorrectly (rare).
Can I send money to Pakistan using IBAN only?
For domestic transfers within Pakistan, IBAN is enough. For international transfers TO Pakistan, you also need: SWIFT/BIC code of receiving bank, recipient name and address, sender details. IBAN alone is for European-style transfers.
Is my IBAN confidential?
IBAN is not highly confidential — banks share it for receiving payments. However, never share it publicly. With IBAN, someone can only DEPOSIT money to your account, not withdraw. Still, combined with other info, it can enable fraud.
